Strapping on ice cleats, I felt a thrill of anticipation. Johnston Canyon in summer is beautiful, but in winter, it’s otherworldly. The metal catwalks, usually bustling with visitors, were quiet, leading me into a narrow world of snow-dusted rock and impossibly blue ice. Every turn revealed a new sculpture carved by nature—frozen tendrils clinging to cliffs, and the Lower Falls, a magnificent frozen cathedral.
